The growing rate of prescription drug abuse in West Virginia is particularly evident in the number of deaths from an overdose. Over a period of five years, the state had an increase in the number of prescription drug overdose deaths of 550 percent. It was the highest increase in the United States and underlined the unique problem within the state.
